How can I make money doing research without having to work at a university?

As a career, I would like to do research in the field of energy and fuel chemistry, but I do not want to work at a university. The reason for this is that I am not particularly interested in teaching. What are some options for me? I am open to entrepreneurship, if that makes a difference.How can I make money doing research without having to work at a university?
Look for jobs at private oil and energy companies. Many of them have their own research and development departments.
