How many hours per week does research and devlopment work entail?

I'm taking a second bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering right now (because it's what I've always wanted to do), and I'm just curious - how many hours per week does someone involved in research and devlopment typically find themselves required to give? I'm just curious since I've heard of how it is hard to raise a family in a position like this from someone, down the line. Can it take the usual 40 hours? Maybe 60? 80? What? How many hours per week does research and devlopment work entail?
Ah, some of my best days were working for R%26amp;D companies. It's exciting and invigorating to be working on things that have never been done before with bleeding edge technology and surrounded by brilliant minds all of you with a common goal.

The hours, in my experience at three firms over 15 years was that you were expected to work 37.5-44 hours depending on your work place standard. But my problem, as with most people, is that the deadlines and excitement mixed with a culture of workaholism will keep you there longer.

I strongly suggest that you explore the workplace culture and talk with potential peers after you are offered a position and before you accept it.

At the end of the interview when they say "is there anything you'd like to ask" tell them that if you were offered a position you'd like the opportunity to chat with coworkers before you'd accept. Most employers will be happy to hear it, they are looking for people who are a good fit with their company just as much as you are looking for a job that is a good fit for you.

None-the-less, expect that when a major deadline is approaching and contract penalties are at risk, you'll all be burning the candle at both ends for a few weeks.

Good luck, and hope that helps. How many hours per week does research and devlopment work entail?
That depends quite a bit on the job. Some place have a x-y hour scheme, other have a when we need you; you will be there. When we need you to travel; you will travel. No ifs, and, or buts.

Another thing you need to be aware of, particularly is that you may at times not be allowed to talk about your work; not even with your spouse.

Typically 40-50. Certainly less than 80. Few companies will expect their employees to work 12+ hour days on a regular basis. Unless they pay really well, that's usually a recipe for a high turnover rate.
