I read that the majority of work a professor actually does is research. What kind of research will a professor find himself doing? I am contemplating becoming an English or Philosophy professor and I'm just curious as to what the job actually entails.What kind of research does being a professor involve?

In order to be a professor you'll need to have a PhD. This involves a lot of study and a thesis or dissertation, which you'll have to defend both orally and in writing. The good news is that once you've chosen your field, you pretty much decide what you'll specialize in. An English professor could research anything from Beowulf to Shakespeare to Stephen King. The important thing is a deep love and interest for your subject and the desire to find out as much as possible about it. Professors are expected to research and publish their findings, but most do it because they want to. The idea behind academic research is to increase the knowledge available in a given field. That is done differently in different fields. An English professor might be looking at a particular author's work and how it addressed a particular issue, or s/he might be researching how a particular subject matter, such as war, religion, or the role of women, was addressed by authors during a particular historical period. A philosophy professor may be looking at themes within a particular philosopher's work, or may be comparing how approaches toward a topic changed over time. In both cases (unlike in the physical sciences, where a researcher may be conducting experiments), the type of research is likely to involve a very detailed reading of the work of an author or philosopher, as well as reading everything that others have written in the area, and writing papers and books to provide a different interpretation of all of that work to the field.
