I will have a project running this coming fall but the details are

still in development. I can only say generally that it will concern

social alienation. I should have more specific information by the end

of July.

He is likely asking for a copy of any scholarly writing you have completed (e.g., term papers, theses, dissertations, journal articles).

A writing sample would be something you've written in the past similar to what you'd have to write for his project. Maybe an essay or lab reports. Probably to see if you hit the details, have a good vocabulary, clear writing style, etc.
